Nikon has released Capture NX2 and for the Mac users, the speed is greatly improved over v1.x, a long with all the improvements. Not sure about the speed on Windows sorry.
60 day full free trial, and (at least on the Mac) you can have it installed a long side Capture NX 1.x.
You can now use the U-Point technology to select areas of a picture, very handy. The new Highlight Protection and Shadow Protection sliders work very well. Jason P. Odell (one half of the Image Doctors) has also released his new ebook The Photographer's Guide to Capture NX2, still working my way through it. _________________ Rob

Why would you use this over Lightroom - I know it's a bit cheaper, but what else? _________________ Simon Taylor LRPS, LBPPA

I think some people prefer the way it displays RAW files as it uses a different algorithm for interpreting the RAW information.
Also some people find it easier to use than LR.
Personal preference of course... _________________ website | twitter |

In theory the Nikon software is capable of producing better results from the NEF files, since there is some proprietary information that has not been made available to the wider world - I understand that Canon do the same thing?
In reality I agree with Al, it comes down to which software you prefer - I had a look at the old NX and couldn't get on with it, so I'm firmly with Lightroom. _________________ Dom - flickr

| Does the Nikon software come for free with the camera? Alternatively - how much is it? How much is the upgrade? |

Other than the other items, it has some interesting technology for automatically masking items.
You can place a control point in a sky for instance, and change the brightness, contrast, color, etc of that sky without effecting the rest of the image. The control point is smart enough to self mask the effected area only.
It also can read the "D-lighting" info that you can tweak in camera on the newer (D300, D3, and some others) Nikons.
And it can save all the changes back into the original RAW file as non destructive edits. _________________ Ravsitar

I got capture NX for free when I first bought a dslr. I found it incredibly slow on fairly well spec'd computer so I looked elsewhere.
I think you get a trial CD now... _________________ website | twitter |

Also, if you shoot raw, and you use Nikon's Picture Controls, Capture NX will recognize the Picture Control and apply the settings to the raw file when you open it. Since it's applied to a raw file, you can change picture control settings non-destructively.
Can save time in post, but not if you're using CaptureNX 1.x, since whatever time you'd save you'll spend waiting for the application to open the image in the first place...
Cheers,
