Do you have a correct calibration of your monitor? Can you trust your computer screen? In Show #4 Chris gives an example about what can go wrong if your monitor is calibrated incorrectly.
In this article you’ll get some information about the ways you can calibrate your monitor to display your own pictures correctly.
Although colour management is quite a complex topic, there are quite a few tools that can help you in calibrating without expensive hard- and software.
Of course there are many free tools, which can be found very easily via google. There’s one tool that is both compatible with Windows and Mac called WizyWig, and available under http://www.praxisoft.com.
On the Show there’s a good guide on how to set up the calibration.
If you’re using Adobe© software like Adobe Photoshop, there’s another tool you can use for your calibration called Adobe Gamma. The routine of calibration is almost the same in every calibration tool. When it comes to professional colour management, better (and more expensive) systems are available (e.g a combination of a hardware “scanner” that checks the colour of your monitor in exactly the same way as you see it.)
As there are several situations that can irritate your eye, those systems are the most effective ones. One example is the Colorvision Spyder as a combination of both hard- and software for montior calibration.
